Evolution of the Hard Drive
1956 – The first computer with a disk drive was created by IBM in 1956. The 305 RAMAC computer consisted of a fifty 24″ discs that allowed it to have 4.4 MB of hard disk space. The 305 RAMAC cost $35,000 annually.
1962: IBM launches the 1301 “Advanced Disk File”, which has 25 disks of 24-inch size and a capacity of 28 MB.
1963 – Introducing the first removable hard drive! Consisting of 6 platters of 14-inch size and a whopping capacity of 2.69 MB!
1971 – Being the first flexible read-only disc drive was launched with an extreme amount of space. A whole 0.0816 MB on a single 8-inch disk.
1979 – IBM launches the first disk drive with thin film heads which has a capacity of 571 MB and seven 14-inch platters.
1980 – The first gigabyte hard disk drive from IBM was the size of a refrigerator. Weighing in at 250 kg you’d expect this beast to cost $40,000.
1991 – IBM introduces the 0663 Corsair, the first disk drive with thin film magnetoresistive heads. It has eight 3.5-inch platters and stores 1GB.
2000 – Seagate introduces the first 15,000 RPM hard drive – Cheetah X15 ST318451 with 18,350 MB capacity and three 2.5-inch platters.
2006 – Seagate launch one of the largest hard drives to date. The Barracuda 7200 containing 750GB of space.
2010 – This monster known as WD ShareSpace contains a whopping 8 TB of space! Plenty for the whole family to enjoy.
